Update on Survey programme

LINZ undertakes Hydrographic surveys to continually improve the data it holds on New Zealand’s seabed, including:

  • Determining the least depths over any navigational hazards such as rock shoals, wrecks, etc.
  • Collecting continuous tide measurements to establish a datum.
  • Recording tide levels and streams.
  • Determining the positions of Aids to Navigation for the mariner such as lights and beacons.
  • Determining the shape and location of the coastline as well as important features on the coast.
  • Collecting information within the port areas.
In 2007/2008 Akaroa Harbour, Abel Tasman, Milford Sound, Doubtful & Thompson Sounds and Dusky & Breaksea Sounds were surveyed.

This data is used to create and maintain official charts and publications.
